Storage and Pre-use Handling of Coated Abrasives

In order to make the coated abrasives in the best working condition, some basic knowledge about the storage and use of the coated abrasives will be briefly introduced. As a supplier of sanding disc and manufacture of sand roll, Binic is the specialist for coated abrasives.

Coated abrasives vary in different varieties and are affected by climate. Generally speaking, the warehouse for storing coated abrasives should be cool, dry and ventilated. Coated abrasives should be neatly placed on the shelf, not stacked on the ground. The cargo rack should be kept at a distance of 1m from the ground and the wall, and at the same time, it should avoid being close to the heat dissipation and drainage devices. The ideal temperature for the storage of coated abrasives is 18°C to 22°C and the humidity is 55% to 65%; for general coated abrasives, do not open the package as much as possible before use. Various resin abrasive belts, water-resistant abrasive belts and roll products, especially composite-based abrasive belts and paper abrasive belts, have stricter storage conditions. At high temperature and low humidity, they are easy to harden and break, and the adhesive is easy to age; at high humidity and low temperature, it is easy to absorb moisture and deform. Polyester cloth abrasive belts are sensitive to cold and cannot be stored in cold warehouses.

The abrasive belt should be hung before use. The unpacked abrasive belt should be hung on a pipe with a diameter of 100~250mm and let it hang for 2~3 days. The selection of the pipe diameter should be based on the abrasive belt particle size. For coarse-grained products, choose a large-diameter pipe, and for a fine-grained product, choose a small-diameter pipe. The purpose of the belt suspension is to eliminate the curling caused by packaging, and also to adapt the belt to the temperature and humidity of the working environment. When the abrasive belt is suspended, the joint should be on the pipe, the pipe should be in a horizontal state, and the unpacked abrasive belt should be avoided to stand on the edge as much as possible.

Waterproof sandpaper products should not be stored in a high temperature and low humidity environment, because in this case it is easy to become brittle and hard, and the binder will age quickly. If the product is found to be brittle and hard, soak the product in warm water at 40°C until it becomes soft before use. In short, only ideal storage and proper handling before use can ensure that the coated abrasives are ground in the best state, and can improve the service life of the coated abrasives and the grinding quality of the workpiece.
